On the border
of Beaujolais and at the extreme south of the M’connais, Saint-VČrand
was called after VČran : a hermit
of the sixth century who was the patron of shepherds and
cattle and who attended the Council of M’con
in 585 as he also was the bishop of
Cavaillon.
The previous name used to be Saint-VČrand
des Vignes and Chardonnay had been grown there for ages;
then the hermit spelling was chosen in 1971
to name the AOC growth Saint-VČran (without the "d")
produced by the 6 areas from the M’connais which are : Ch’nes,
Chasselas, DavayČ, Leynes, PrissČ and Saint-VČrand.
