It is located between Saint Vérand and Chasselas in the Arlois valley at the foot of the Monts du Bois de Fay and of Balmont.

As the area is very wide, Leynes is made up of numerous hamlets. The names of the places are reminiscent of minor war events that occurred during the fifteenth century, such as the "lieu-dit des batailles" (battle place) for example.

An old castle can be found in the centre of the village. Instead of protecting the villagers, it became the cause of many disasters, owing to the numerous invasions that took place during the fatal wars dividing France and Burgundy.

Leynes’s hilllsides – exposed south-east and south-west – are mainly composed of limestone soils to the west, sandstone and porphyry to the east, while the rest is clay limestone and sand.

The saint-Véran appelllation spreads over a surface of about 90 hectares, which represents a yearly production of 6000 hectoliters.
