In Burgundy, it is not unusual for an appellation to be named after a village of the region, but it is worth noting the spelling difference between one village of the appellation -Saint Vérand- and the name of the appellation - Saint Véran.
The appellation takes the name of a famous Holy man associated with local history and geography, the 6th century Bishop of Cavaillon for the Mâcon Council gave his name to the village of Saint-Véran, which later became Saint-Véran des Vignes, then Saint-Vérand.
The appellation links local history and geography.
